New Materials Developed for HOFNOD
The Future Foundation is standardizing and updating the existing Hooked On Fishing - Not on Drugs program. To make the program easier and more appealing to new HOFNOD instructors, the education staff has developed two new curriculum tools.
The "HOFNOD Program Guide" comprises 10 complete, easy-to-use activities that carry out and complement the Aquatic Resources Education Curriculum. These activities define the core elements of a HOFNOD program.
"By basing a HOFNOD program on these activities, an instructor can complete a successful program," said Anne Glick, ASA's educational programs coordinator.
A youth workbook also has been added to the list of HOFNOD resources now available. The workbook is a series of review sheets, puzzles, journal pages, photo pages, and fishing logs to use with the new program guide. Placed in a three-ring binder, journal and photo pages can be added and removed, making this an individual addition to the HOFNOD curriculum.
Beyond the new program materials all certified HOFNOD instructors can now purchase, through the Future Fisherman Foundation, the fishing equipment needed to run a HOFNOD program. Youth-quality spinning and spincasting combos - along with small tackle boxes (with a HOFNOD sticker) containing hooks, bobbers and sinkers - are available at deeply discounted prices.
In addition to the new curriculum and equipment, the Hooked On Fishing - Not On Drugs video, "A Program that Works for Life," is being updated. This new video, which will replace the previous version, is divided into two sections, Glick said.
"The first segment teaches youth that fishing is a healthy choice and tells how it can help them remain drug-free," she said. "The second segment is aimed at instructors and outlines what it takes to make a HOFNOD program successful."
The new curriculum, equipment and video are expected to be completed by January 2000.
FFF Down Under
The Future Fisherman Foundation is in final negotiations with an educational organization in Malvern, Australia, to bring HOFNOD to the land down under. The president of Business Education Enterprise Projects will be joining the foundation at an upcoming HOFNOD instructor certification workshop.
On the home front, the Future Fisherman Foundation's state HOFNOD coordinators are hard at work conducting instructor training workshops in 16 states.
During this grant year (May 2000 to April 2001), the foundation will conduct instructor certification workshops in seven to nine new states. Plans are under way for workshops in New Jersey, Alabama, Mississippi, Texas, and California.
