In
2005 the Lower Mississippi River Conservation Committee, Southeast Region of
the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service, U. S. Army Corps of Engineers,
Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries & Parks, and a group of
nongovernmental organizations formed a partnership to build the first in a
series of 239 aquatic habitat restoration projects in the Lower Mississippi
River. The project consisted of designing and constructing a 300’ wide notch
in a rock dike located within the 5.47 mile-long Island 63 secondary channel.
Primary funding for the project was provided by the U. S. Fish and Wildlife
Service, with assistance from four other organizations. The project restores
flow through the channel to provide passage for riverine fish; improves
aquatic habitat and water quality; increases public outdoor recreation
opportunities, and; benefits Threatened & Endangered fish. Quapaw
Landing, a public boat ramp owned and maintained by the Yazoo-Mississippi
Levee Board, provides access to the Island 63 channel and is accessible from
Highway 1 at Farrell, Mississippi.
