RECREATION The Lower Mississippi River offers numerous recreational opportunities. Many recreational opportunities along the Lower Mississippi result from the legacy of its past. The River made its mark on all the states that border it but it has been dramatically influential in Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi where it created a vast floodplain over thousands of years. This 24 million-acre forested wetland, generally called "the Delta", once supported a diversity of species in unimaginable numbers and the ecosystem encourages an outdoor lifestyle today. Fishing, birding, wildlife watching and hunting are very popular pastimes along the River. Boating, canoeing, and camping on the River afford a never-ending adventure. History and regional culture have created the Blues and Southern Cuisine, making the Lower River a continuously interesting, informative, and tasty tourism attraction.
