THE MISSISISSIPPI RIVER: AN UNSUNG NATURAL WONDER
Since 1994, the LMRCC has worked hand-in-hand with engineers, scientists, private landowners and others to help manage the Lower Mississippi River in ways that respect its economic value while sustaining important ecological processes, restoring altered habitats and raising the profile of this unsung natural wonder.

OUR WORK
The LMRCC focuses on habitat restoration, long-term conservation planning and scientific assessment of the river’s health.

The Lower Mississippi River: Why it matters to America
The Lower Mississippi River’s remaining floodplain is the largest in any river system in the United States. The river and its floodplain cover 2 million acres of land and water in Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri and Tennessee. Here’s why this important landscape matters.
A natural treasure
This working river is an enduring natural treasure that retains a raw wildness and ranks among the Amazon, Yangtze, Nile, Congo, Parana and other great riverine ecosystems on Earth.
Working together
Scientists, engineers and others are working together to manage the Lower Mississippi River for all values: navigation, flood abatement and natural resources conservation.
Clean water
Factories, power plants and cities depend on hundreds of millions of gallons of water from the river daily. Clean water is crucial to the economy, health, wildlife and our enjoyment of the outdoors.
Outdoor paradise
The Lower Mississippi River and its associated habitats offer world-class outdoor experiences. The LMRCC’s restoration projects enhance habitats for fishing, hunting and other pursuits.
